Ingredients
Scale
- 6 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji work well)
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 2 cups packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup light corn syrup
- 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Optional toppings: chopped nuts, sprinkles, crushed cookies, sea salt
Instructions
- Prepare the apples:
- Wash, dry, and remove stems. Insert wooden sticks into the center of each apple.
- Make the caramel:
- In a heavy saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar, corn syrup, and sweetened condensed milk.
- Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Use a candy thermometer and cook until caramel reaches 245°F (soft ball stage). Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
- Dip the apples:
- Working quickly, dip each apple into the caramel, turning to coat evenly. Let excess drip off.
- Add toppings:
- Immediately roll or sprinkle with desired toppings before caramel sets.
- Set and serve:
- Place apples on parchment paper to cool and harden. Serve once caramel is firm.
Notes
- Use firm apples for best crunch and structure
- Add sea salt to caramel for salted caramel apples
- Try different toppings: crushed pretzels, toasted coconut, or mini chocolate chips
- Store in a cool place to prevent caramel from melting
