  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk

For the Buttercream Frosting

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 34 cups powdered sugar
  • 23 tbsp heavy cream or milk
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

Prepare the Cake

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C)
  2. Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans
  3. Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt together
  4. Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy (3–4 minutes)
  5. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla
  6. Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients
  7. Divide batter evenly between pans

Bake

  1. Bake for 25–30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean
  2. Cool in pans for 10 minutes
  3. Transfer to wire rack to cool completely

Make the Buttercream

  1. Beat butter until creamy
  2. Gradually add powdered sugar
  3. Mix in vanilla, salt, and cream
  4. Beat until smooth and fluffy

Assemble

  1. Frost between cake layers
  2. Apply crumb coat and chill 20 minutes
  3. Frost final layer smoothly
  4. Decorate as desired
