For the Vanilla Cake

- 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup whole milk
For the Buttercream Frosting
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3–4 cups powdered sugar
- 2–3 tbsp heavy cream or milk
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
Prepare the Cake
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C)
- Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans
- Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt together
- Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy (3–4 minutes)
- Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla
- Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients
- Divide batter evenly between pans
Bake
- Bake for 25–30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean
- Cool in pans for 10 minutes
- Transfer to wire rack to cool completely
Make the Buttercream
- Beat butter until creamy
- Gradually add powdered sugar
- Mix in vanilla, salt, and cream
- Beat until smooth and fluffy
Assemble
- Frost between cake layers
- Apply crumb coat and chill 20 minutes
- Frost final layer smoothly
- Decorate as desired
